The use of the right font can bring immediate gratification to any publication. To choose the right font, one must know the type of fonts and the basic difference between each. Most typefaces can be classified into one of four basic groups: those with serifs, those without serifs (sans serif), scripts and decorative styles. This blog will give you a basic idea about each of the four.
Serif
Serif fonts include a small decorative line, more like an embellishment to the basic form of any alphabet or character. These embellishments, small marks or strokes make the font easier to read. The most common serif typefaces are Times Roman, New Century Gothic, and Palatino.
Sans Serif
The word ‘sans’ means without, hence fonts without the tiny embellishments are called sans serif fonts. These fonts are composed of simple lines. Since sans serif fonts are considered more difficult to read, they are use as headlines and highlighted text in many publications. Some popular sans serif fonts are Helvetica, Avant Garde and Geneva.
Script
The fonts that categorize under script mimic calligraphic or hand writing. They have curves and are mostly running fonts. They appear to have been written by pen or drawn with a brush. Normally, character strokes connect one letter to the next. Some example include Belltrap, Freestyle Script, Great Vibes, Marck Script among others.
Decorative
This is the largest category of fonts and also the most diverse in nature. The can be of any size or shape and are used distinctively for posters or banners or to create an identity of a brand. Decorative fonts can be dramatic while speaking volumes on being associated with the right things.
