They say, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’, well as deep as this saying is, to us this only means there are no real rules to designing a book cover. But it is important to keep in mind that a book cover is also a book’s number one marketing tool. A designer can hence make use of some tips, so that he does not stray away from the book’s subject completely while designing a cover.
Symbolic Designing
The front cover is the first thing that most readers will see. A great way to avoid being too literal with your design is to experiment using symbols to represent a larger idea or concept. A strong, simple, symbolic cover is much more likely to catch readers’ attention, than one that is complicated or cluttered.
Title should easy to read
Using fancy fonts makes no sense because it becomes difficult for readers to even understand the title. Hence keeping the title simple and readable becomes most important. Stay away from using fonts like: Comic Sans or Papyrus and avoid putting words in all caps or italics caps.
Use quality stock images
Try not to overdo your cover by using clip art images or easily available free stock images. Using free images can be misleading as these images can be easily picked up by others, worse you can face copyright issues.
Technical guidelines
Designers must be aware of copyright issues when submitting images for the cover. It is also important to make use of high resolution images. Designers can avoid production delays by submitting a layered TIFF or Photoshop file where the text is on a separate layer from the images.
